The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust’s vision is healthy Hebridean seas for whales, dolphins, porpoises and people. Their mission is to conserve Hebridean whales, dolphins and porpoises through robust science, inspirational education and meaningful engagement, so that they thrive alongside coastal communities. Based on the Isle of Mull, in the heart of the Hebrides, HWDT has been leading the way for the conservation of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the waters of western Scotland for over two decades.
The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust believe that evidence is the foundation of effective conservation. Data collected on research voyages provides the Scottish Government with detailed information that assists in the protection of minke whales, Risso’s dolphins, harbour porpoises, and basking sharks across Hebridean seas. This research has also critically advanced the understanding of species that visit seasonally or are resident in the seas throughout the Hebrides.
HWDT work directly with communities to encourage stewardship of these rich seas and their education programmes reach out to over 20,000 people each year. Their work is consistently highlighting the importance of the marine environment and how vital it is that we take responsibility for protecting it for future generations.
The Hebridean Whale Trail.
Watching whales, dolphins, porpoises and other marine wildlife from shore in Scotland is a wonderful experience. However, knowing where to look and what to look for is not always easy. That is where the Hebridean Whale Trail aims to help. The Hebridean Whale Trail encourages accessible, low-impact whale-watching from land, which for many is a new way of approaching marine wildlife spotting.
The Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust is leading this exciting initiative, teaming up with local community groups, conservation charities, businesses and individuals to create a trail that has community at its heart. By working together, we aim to raise awareness and celebrate the incredible marine life here on Scotland’s west coast.
