“Wild Swimming” is booming as never before. Half a million people plunge into our natural rivers, ponds, estuaries and seas on a regular basis, a number that has doubled in three years. Between 2019 and 2020 searches for the term wild swimming increased by 94 per cent. Four million people swim outdoors every year.
There are 40,000 lakes and you are never more than 70 miles from a coast in the UK, and if you would like to take the plunge then we cannot think of a better bunch of people to join than the Outdoor Swimming Society….
The Outdoor Swimming Society was established in 2006 to pioneer outdoor swimming in rivers, lakes, lido and seas. It started with a simple mission, to give permission to swim wild. This is a permission which was never withdrawn, merely forgotten. The team behind the OSS is a small family of creators, adventurers, explorers, writers, thinkers and photographers, driven by a shared interest in outdoor swimming.
As outdoor swimming grew in popularity over the years the OSS mission evolved to share the love of swimming, bring outdoor swimming into the mainstream, and introduce it to more people.
Whether you’re training for a triathlon or simply looking for a great way to exercise outdoors, open water swimming is a challenging but rewarding place to start, and The Outdoor Swimming Society is a great introduction to likeminded people and places to swim where there is safety in numbers.
